What exactly does a copywriter do?

Copywriters write compelling stuff for websites and sales materials. Some of them will specialise in one thing, like writing radio adverts for example. Others will have a broader focus.

We go by many names, some obvious, like “advertising copywriter.” Others are a little more confusing. For instance, you might hear someone say they’re a content writer. There is a difference.

Copywriting focusses on writing for sales and conversions. Content writing’s main aim is to engage readers and build a relationship through things like blogs and articles.

What skills are needed to be a copywriter?

Natural writing talent certainly helps. Many, like me, have a degree in English Literature and love writing, whether it’s for cash or not.

You also need exceptional research skills and the ability to manage your time. If you’re a freelancer, you will often juggle more than one project at a time, and you’ll have deadlines to meet.

Copywriting isn’t about sounding clever. It’s about connecting with people to elicit a response or an emotion. To do this, writers need to have empathy and good listening skills to be able to see other people’s point of view.

SEO copywriters like me have an additional set of skills to offer. SEO is quirky and complicated by nature, and it’s not something you can pick up overnight. Trained SEO copywriters will be certified from a respected training house (check out my certifications here.) An SEO copywriter combines a talent for writing with an ability to build your SEO content strategy through keywords to drive more traffic to your site.

Are copywriters in demand?

Businesses are always in need of certain content pieces, so it can get busy! Web copywriting, landing pages, blogs and marketing emails are just a few essentials most companies need a steady flow of.

I usually work to a one to two-week turnaround for most projects, depending on how busy my workload is, and how involved the project looks.

Something like an SEO blog post can be turned around within a day or two even during busy periods. If your project involves a full website overhaul, from competitor research to creating audience personas and conducting keyword research and rewriting your website, this will naturally take longer.

Is copywriting easy?

Ask anyone who’s tried to write their website or blog post. Copywriting isn’t the easiest job in the world! Many writers quite rightly point out that creativity isn’t something that happens on tap. Sometimes you can sweat over a meta title and spend an hour on it. Other times you turn around a 500-word blog post in a similar amount of time.

I’ve been a freelance copywriter for almost ten years now, so I have a good idea of how long a piece of work typically takes. That’s what I’ll base my quote on for you. So, you have a fair price from the start and a clear idea of timelines.

Why hire a freelance copywriter?

There are a few options if you’re a business looking for copywriting help. You could hire someone in-house or ask an agency to support you with your content. Or, you can hire a freelancer.

There are pros and cons to each option, but there are some really good reasons for hiring a freelance copywriter. A good freelancer will take absolute pride in anything they produce for you. Although the rights to the work are 100% yours, the love, care and craftsmanship come from them.

With every client, I strive to add value wherever I can because I care as much about your content succeeding as you do. If it pulls in more traffic and gets you noticed, I’m thrilled. And if your existing content isn’t hitting home, I’ll conduct research to find new ways to optimise it and bring it up to scratch.

What are typical freelance copywriter rates in the UK?

In a survey by ProCopywriters, the biggest membership organisation for copywriters, the average day rate for UK copywriters was £379.

Copywriter rates depend on their location and experience. Senior copywriters can charge anything up to £2000+ a day.

If someone is charging a high rate, it quite literally pays to check out their credentials. If it’s a lot less, the copywriter might not have the skills and experience you need.

My core belief is that every brand, large and small should have access to great copywriting without paying the earth. My rates reflect this, sitting close to the UK’s average rate.

Can a copywriter help with brand tone of voice?

Developing your brand’s tone of voice will help readers understand what you’re all about. If it’s well crafted, your content will feel relatable to your audience, and it will reflect your brand’s core values.

I’ve worked alongside established brands, seamlessly slotting into their predefined tone of voice to keep their content up to date. I’ve also helped newer brands to construct their tone of voice guidelines and craft copy that wins audiences over.

What are the different types of copywriting?

Have you got confused over the type of copywriter you need? You’re not alone! Copywriters tend to be defined by overarching skill, say, SEO copywriter for instance, but some also define themselves by sector or niche.

If you’re ever wondering what a freelancer does, don’t be afraid to ask them.

As you’re here, here’s my answer. I’m an SEO copywriter, and I work with lifestyle brands. I write website copy, blogs, landing pages, articles, category pages and product descriptions primarily. But I’ve been known to help people with brochures, marketing emails, whitepapers and podcast transcripts too.

How do you work with a freelancer?

Transparency is so important for businesses working with freelancers. I usually start by finding out more about you and what you need. Some people like to do this over email. Others like to meet, either virtually or face to face if they’re local.

Then I take a brief and provide a quote, timeline, and payment options.

I then deliver the work, either as milestones or in one go, depending on the project.

If you need them, we’ll work through a round of revisions once you’ve looked at the work. When you’re happy, I send the invoice across, on 30-day terms unless we’ve agreed otherwise, or you’ve selected to pay in instalments.

Throughout the process, I’m on hand to answer any questions.
